Be prepared - because everything that can go wrong, will go wrong!

Haven't posted in a while but today I made an LJ post... figured I should also post it here as well since I've neglected this for a few months... haven't yet had time to do my travel other posts. =)

Last week, my politics professor emphasised on how students shouldn't leave things till the last minute - in terms of procrastinating about essay writing.

Don't wait till the last minute
- to research
- to write your essay
- to print your essay
- to do your references
- to submit it to Turnitin.


Because come Monday, your computer will crash, your hard drive will fail, your printer will jam or run out of ink, your dog will eat your homework, your Internet wont connect, etc. So don't leave it up to chance. Finish it ASAP and hand it in early. People will be lining up to drop off the hard copy on the 8th floor. And you all know there's only one tiny lift that goes up that building. So chances are, that lift is going to break down and you don't want to have to run up 8 floors to make it in time before the deadline!

I'm usually one of those people who leave everything to the last minute. I hand in essays with the feeling that I'll be grateful if I just pass. Last week I had a Japanese literature essay due on Friday. It's one of the few essays I've started over a week in advance and I finished it over a day in advance. Except it's usually those essays that I fail terribly at.

Today's essay was another one of those last minute scrambles. I just couldn't get it right. I wasn't sure what it was, at first I couldn't pick a question because I found it difficult to interpret and understand all the questions). In the end, the topic I picked... I don't even know if I answered the question in the way they wanted.

In the end, I figured I'd be spending up til the very last minute fixing it up. Thanks to shuyiin though, I finished my essay at 3am. Actually, she didn't do anything except for ask to hang today before my classes at 3pm. I left the house to catch the 11:58 train - and thank god for that! Trains were delayed due to wires having fallen on the tracks at Greenlane. Southern Trains bound to and from Britomart had to move over to use the tracks used by the Onehunga Line so the Onehunga train had to wait for trains to pass - otherwise, obvious catastrophe, no?

Never mind! I was early to the city because of the plans with Shu. It was when I was telling her about what my professor said that I realised I had forgotten to print off the receipt from Turnitin! So it is true, everything that can go wrong... WILL go wrong!

After handing in the essay, we headed to Carl's Jr for lunch. Every time I eat there, I regret it afterwards...

Yes, that's my hand. My friend came over last night and gave me that bear! She wanted to get rid of it because it was a gift from her ex boyfriend and her current boyfriend has a problem with her holding onto it. How silly.

IC COMPS ARE TOO SLOW

This is going to be a very jumpy post because I'm jumpy, sleepy and pissed at the computer.

I'm sitting at a comp in IC because I want to do my ArcGIS assignment but the computers are way too slow and my ArcMap isn't loading fast enough.

So here I am, opting to make a blog post. I missed last week's. Why? Because I was busy doing an assignment and helping my friend in Japan do translations. Oh and when I wasn't doing that, I was watching Grey's Anatomy. I started from the beginning again because I have no idea where I stopped watching like five years ago.

Last week, my boss from my old job called me and gave me my job back - instant. I start again in two days. The second I stop wishing for something, it will always present itself to me. Due to this, I suddenly had much less time to do my assignments/studying (you know, since I leave everything to the last possible minute). I was supposed to spend the Saturday with Freak so I was freaking out about no time and I started wishing for her appointment to be cancelled. It was. Ok, wish hard enough, you get it.

WELL HERE'S A WISH: I WISH ARCMAP WILL STOP BEING SO SLOW ON THIS STUPID COMPUTER.



Whatever. I also learnt something new. For the past week, I've been tortured by Python because we are learning it for compsci111. I didn't pay attention in class so I struggled with the lab. Thank god I have the co-founder of Notable as a friend. Messaged him and he explained the code to me and wrote one for me so I could learn it. Finished it in time.

Today Nescafe was hanging out in the quad giving out free coffee. Asians don't say no to free things - even if I don't drink coffee. So I walk up and grab some freebies.

First, you get a voucher for $1 off the pack in the supermarkets...

Then the girl handed me the cup of coffee.

I was thinking how did they get a tap in the middle of the quad? Who cares, I had to go to class and the cup of coffee was burning my delicate hand.

After my freebie collecting self was satisfied, I headed off to my GIS lecture. I suck at paying attention in class. God knows how I manage to pass. Since I am really bad at it, I ended up playing on Instagram - I've discovered the joy of hash tags. Well, I've always known it, so I guess I should say "I've discovered the joy that hash tags bring me". I used hash tags in one of my pictures and people liked my pictures. So... being the attention seeking whore that I am, I went back and hash tagged most of my previous pictures and waited for the likes. So lame.

Also, I just quit the ArcMap programme because I couldn't handle the wait.

Back to my being unable to focus in lectures? Well, I started taking photos of my scarf.

1. Hurry up and pass my full license
2. Do something crazy - that is go with my friends to Momotea. ...in Hamilton. Thus the need for my full license.
3. Drive up to Cape Reinga. BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS WILL FOLLOW.

The coffee must have worked well because I had become focused and I even took notes in the last half hour of the two hour lecture.

Well, I've killed enough time. I should probably head home. My eyes are killing me but I cannot remove my contacts.

Uni, birthday and Batman

It's been a month since I've come back from Melbourne. A few things have happened since then.

• Destroyed a friendship (possibly, or at least we're both not talking to each other. But whatever, I've done my bit, he needs to step up if he wants to be a part of my life otherwise, I'll hold the door open and help him walk out of it).
• FINALLY sent in my application for the 360 Abroad. My three choices are HKU, CUHK and Melbourne University. Except as soon as I hit send, I felt like my choices weren't "exotic" enough. I had briefly toyed with the idea of Sweden.
• Went out with dinner.
• Got a credit card and then spent too much money.
• Had dinner with a few friends.
• My birthday!
• Worked too much.
• Got sick.
• Started semester 2 of uni! Which has so far been AWESOME.
• Also, watched two seasons of Vampire Diaries and developed a celebrity crush on Damon. *drools*

I'm not going to talk about every point... but where should I start? Dinner with friends perhaps! I went to dinner at my favourite Japanese restaurant in town with three of my friends. More of a dinner than a catch up, I felt. It was a pretty good feast. I would have taken pictures if the environment wasn't so dark and we weren't so starved. We had a lot of sashimi, a plate of beef tataki and the rest, I can't remember!

My chosen dessert! I think they had about three flavours. This one is green tea. It was delicious, but not as delicious as the passion fruit panna cotta in Botany.

 

Didn't quite know what to do after dinner so kinda lounged around outside the restaurant, took another self group shot then left.

We drove down to Aotea Square where they put up the winter ice rink so we could have a look. Prices are ridiculous, I imagined it to be a much bigger rink but there was a lot of space that wasn't utilised. Didn't stop us from taking pictures though. =)

We wandered around and saw a carousel. We got a little bit excited and took pictures. Except, we were too into ourselves to realise that we pretty much cut out the whole carousel.

Then, being the fatties that we are, we went to Yoghurt Story for round two of dessert! I used to be an ice cream girl, but now, I've developed a love for yoghurt! It's pretty expensive though. =S

I feel like that was the highlight of the night though. I love the yoghurt from that shop. There's also a lot of hype going around another yoghurt shop that also recently opened, called Easy Yo or something. I have never been there since it's so far away from me and such a pain to go to (all the way in Mission Bay) but I heard there's a branch opening soon in Botany so here's hoping it's good because then I don't always have to go to the city for Yoghurt. Excuse my fatness, I'll endeavour to lose a ton of weight.

I recently got a credit card again and went shopping a few times. In New Zealand, when you join a rewards programme, many shops send you a gift voucher during your birthday month. Since I joined Platinum (Nike), they sent me a $30 voucher which I used to buy some track pants. I wouldn't have bought it without the $30 voucher so guess free money does draw in customers.

But my biggest spend was at the Body Shop. To be honest with you, I haven't actually used my gift (which is 20% off total bill) but they did give free gift packs with my purchases.

First up, here's some body lotion. From left to right, Shea Whip, Coconut Milk, Mango Whip and Strawberry Puree.

I'm currently using the Mango Whip. It smells delicious! The only other one I've used before is the Strawberry Puree. I can't remember how nice it is, so I can't say which I prefer.

Here is a collection of body care. From left to right, Coconut Shower Cream, Peppermint Cooling Foot Lotion, White Musk Shower Gel, Cocoa Butter hand and body lotion, and Love Etc Body Wash.

Those bottles came for free on the condition that you bought a something from the vanilla line, make up line or the sunshine line (ok, not sure about the sunshine part, I forgot if that's what it's called). I bought the vanilla body mist so I was given them.

As I was looking around the store, I saw the Peach Body Lotion sitting on the discounted corner. New Zealand hardly ever has this in store! It smells slightly like the peach hand cream from Canmake's Make me Happy series and since I love that smell, I snapped this up right away.

The reason I bought this was due to how it made me smile. I was in the store one weekend and I tried the tester. When you apply this, the cream turns a pretty shade of pink. It disappears as you rub it into our skin. I haven't used it a lot but when I used the tester, I felt like the it didn't give a greasy finish so I allowed myself to buy it because this product made me smile so much.

It's been two weeks since uni has started and so far 2012 semester 2 is my favourite semester! There's this geography paper I'm taking that's about disasters and how it impacts on society. There's no exam for this paper and the assignments are whack! One major assignment is an Amazing Race themed treasure hunt around Auckland!!! During the introductory lecture, I was so excited about it all, the girl next to me kept shooting me side way glances.

We got into groups and selected our topic - age and gender. We're supposed to think about how disasters affect society, especially those who fall in vulnerable groups within age and gender. So far, we've only passed one clue... the second clue proved to be much harder - we figured it out, but we have to do an interview and the dude hasn't given us a time yet! Other teams have nearly finished. =(

Thankfully, the marks aren't given based on how fast we figure out the clues.

Another one of my exciting papers is a stage one computer science paper. These two papers have PRETTY GOOD LOOKING LECTURERS! My goodness. I can't usually pay attention for more than twenty minutes on a good day, but I find that I hang on to every word my comp sci lecturer says. Don't know if it's his good looks or because the topic actually interests me.

I have another geography paper about GIS that I'm taking. I know it's not the subject, the lecturer bores me to death. But during labs, I am pretty into the topic.

Last Sunday, I went to the movies with Shu to watch Batman. WHY ON EARTH IS HOYTS SO EXPENSIVE?!!!!! Popcorn and coke is crazily overpriced. We've stopped buying food from the cinemas. We went to Pak n Save to buy snacks to bring into the cinema. We bought Mammoth Yoghurt lemon passion flavour because we thought it was pretty funny (it's advertised as a manly yoghurt). During the movie, we started eating it and instantly regretted it. My god. It had gigantic chunks of GOD KNOWS WHAT. Shu reckons there were lemon rinds in it, I thought there were some sort of seeds as well. The yoghurt itself didn't taste bad. Not very sweet but the stuff inside the yoghurt really put us off. It was also really thick. I think we would have enjoyed it more if we weren't eating it in the dark. I'm not in a hurry to give this so called manly yoghurt another try, I'll stick to the girly yoghurt for now.

Excuse me, Batman was awesome. I had tears in my eyes at the end of the movie. I actually hope there will be another one. And can anyone tell me why Google doesn't recognise "movie" or "movies" as a word?

It was my birthday on Friday. Since Shu was working Friday night, we had dinner at our favourite Japanese restaurant in Botany on Thursday. She bought me cake, which we shared with staff. Before I met Shu, I hung out with my other friend, Yun (we've been good friends for ten years!). We went to Cafe Melba in Ellerslie... I usually hate cafe food, but after this experience, it's growing on me. It was pretty good food, and at a cheap price too. Perhaps it's due to location?

Chocolates and letter were from Yun and the cake was Shu. She bought Gold Caramel from the Cheesecake Shop. I thought it would be very sweet, but surprisingly, there was no strong, overly sweet aftertaste.

On my actual birthday, I had classes for everything! I thought it would be draining but it was actually quite enjoyable. Rachel bought me strawberry earrings from Pascoes and they are honestly the most bling things I own right now. She gave them to me during class and I opened them during class. I wasn't expecting them to be so pretty so I gasped pretty loudly. Pretty fly. =) After my classes, I met up with her again and we went to have cake! I think her one was white chocolate cake or something. It had oranges inside. =/ My one was the Tiramisu.

Since this post is probably as long or even longer than my last post, I'm going to try to blog a bit more frequently. My posts are way too long. Excuse me while I go check over my lab exercises that's due tomorrow. =O should have handed it in last week but cbb.

Holidays!

Been on a break for a few days now! Had all my exams last week, hopefully I did well enough!

I had a strong need for coffee on the first day of exams, so while I was cramming my notes into my head, I bought a cup from the coffee shop next to my chosen place of study. Admittedly, the Lounge isn't the best place to cram. Everyone goes there with their friends for lunch! So there's lots of chatter and everyone tries to talk over everyone else!!

And yes... I've started using Instagram. My username is Essenity. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing... currently, Instagram uploads to Facebook and Tumblr. Tumblr posts to Twitter and Twitter posts to Facebook. Confusing? Ugh.

To celebrate the end of exams... I went to work all day on Friday. Yes, that's right. Regrettably, it wasn't very busy that day. The next day however, was on a happier note. The restaurant made over $5000! I only worked lunch time and SC worked too. I have never mentioned how... I hate working with him. I've always hated it, although I grew to like him for himself. I still don't like his presentation. I'm too biased! Instead of working both shifts, I left for the gym. As usual, I had a nap in the car before I hit the gym. Afterwards, I met up with a friend of mine and we went to a yakitori restaurant called Yos Mite.

Now, I'm not going to lie to you but for the longest time, I've always thought this place was called "Yas Nite". In fact, I STILL thought it was called Yas Nite even after I sat down. I made the revelation about halfway through our dinner. Sorry! However, I must say their beef tongue was absolutely a dream! Thick and flavoursome! So are their chicken knuckles and I seem to have developed a liking for chicken gizzard. This is surprising as I used to hate them until a chef at work cooked them once. It was delicious. I'm going to have to come here again with Shu.

Sunday was another semi-busy day. Not over $5000 but definitely over $4000. SC was in a terrible mood. Much too quiet and pissed me off a little. Whatever. He can go mope in his corner. Boss R came in and somehow I seem to have taken on the side job of promoting our Facebook page. (So while you're here, click on that link, like us and share it!) it's going to be my little holiday project. Of course, I hope it will be successful, but knowing me, I don't know how long I will stay motivated for.

Cherries I started munching on after work!!

So I might have condemned myself to a busy holiday, but I was rewarded when I got home with a bunch of cherries! Needless to say, I om-nom-nom'd them before I hit the sack... only waking after noon this Monday. I made a start on the Facebook project. I don't think Boss R was expecting me to be serious about it, but hey! I figured, if we're going to do this, we might as well do it right! Now I better get to bed, I have an early start tomorrow! Meeting Boss R at 10am! Hopefully, in a fully awake state...

Exams

Without fail, at every end of semester, I get that dreaded feeling that I'm going to fail really badly. This semester is no different.


For one of my geography papers, we have to do a group research project. PANIC! I've actually already "passed" but if we fail the research, we actually fail the whole paper even if the research part is only 20% of the final grade!


For another paper, the teacher put up my marks for a test. I didn't do spectacularly and only got 63.9/85? But she made a mistake and input the number as 36.9. I stared at the screen tiredly and decided I was way too tired and depressed and hopeless to give a shit. I'll deal with it tomorrow or something. This however, didn't ease my insecurities about failing. I say it every semester and I'll say it again now... I should have studied. Regardless, 63 is an abhorrent mark. Seriously. Disgusting.


My other geography paper... it's interesting and all but I do crap when I write about it. I understand the concepts and shit but apparently I suck at writing it all down in exams. I'm SORRY OK. So I've already given up for that paper, I'll be glad if I pass it.


I should be most worried about politics. Mainly because that essay I wrote without doing research first is worth 40%. When I was handing it in, I met this other good looking European guy who was also handing in the same assignment. He chose to do the exact same question I did. Except when I asked him what direction he went in, he started talking about pragmatism or something and a whole lot of other terms. Now I didn't actually sleep more than a few hours that night/morning and I blinked at him incredulously because whatever he was saying was definitely not processing in my brain. He then asked me to join him... to smoke some weed. In my sleepy haze, I almost took up on his offer. I reckon if I had not driven to uni and I did not have work that night, I would probably have agreed.


Anyway, my point is... we did the same question, but seems like he went off in a different direction and now I'm freaking out because it's fucking 40% and whatever the fuck he spouted sounded way more intelligent than the bullcrap I made up.


I think I'm going to fail.




After our group meeting, I went to the 360 office and then did my degree planner with both my degrees. I met the rudest administrator in the science department. What a fucking bitch. I talked to her like you would in a normal conversation. She talked back at me like she was so fucking superior. Well excuse me if I thought you'd rather me talk at you instead of giving you an opportunity to reply. I'll talk at you next time, OK? Also, I found out information system is actually not a "major subject" (i.e. not a subject you can major in) under the science faculty. WTF THEN WHY IS IT IN YOUR FUCKING BOOK? So I guess I'll have to change to computer science as my filler courses. Fuck you, uni.


Getting my ass overseas is looking more and more inviting. Gotta pass with a good grade first though. Not looking too promising. Unless someone gives me a few good tips on cramming and essay writing during an exam? Please, I'll take anything!

Melbourne!

A few weeks ago, Grabaseat had cheap return air ticket deals to Melbourne from Auckland. At that time, I passed up the opportunity and didn't buy a ticket. After their deal closed, I saw that the prices were extremely high! Over NZ$200 one way!

Today, just until 11:59pm, they had the special deal again! So I snapped it up. I'll be travelling to Melbourne to see my relatives. While I'm there, I think I might take a look at Melbourne University! I still want to go to HKU though... but I don't know anymore. Maybe I shouldn't bother. I overheard someone telling her friend about the good news that she is heading to Waseda for a year. The amount of jealousy I felt probably is a good indication that I should consider Waseda a bit more...


I'll be going a week after my last exam and will only be going for six days. I already feel it's a bit long for my liking. I want to work!




This morning, I woke up at the usual time and went to uni. It wasn't until I got to uni that I realised my class today actually ended last week and I didn't have any lectures for that class this week!! I can't believe it completely slipped my mind! Then again, it ended up a good thing because I went to the 360 Abroad office and had a look through the HKU information folder. Now I know where HKU is but I'm still not too sure where it is... but that's gonna need to be left for another day! I should start studying or at the very least go to sleep!


Oh a surprise today! I received another letter from HSBC informing me that my "card personal identification number (PIN)" has been changed. I requested them to do this so I can register for internet banking. They sent me a letter dated 16th of May and I used that information. Except it didn't work! Sucks, shitty HSBC. Disgusted, I gave up and decided I'd just wait till I returned to HK and I'd make them do it for me. 


The letter I got today was dated 17th of May! It had a completely different pin on it! WTF?! So I figured I'd give it one last try and LO AND BEHOLD! It worked! Thank god. Now all I have to do is go to HSBC in Botany to sign some piece of paper, get my account details updated and I'LL BE GOOD TO GO. Hopefully, I'll finally get the $6000.

Strange way of doing research

Perhaps it's not just me, but my last post was about how I procrastinate etc. I find that my best work is produced in one sitting, under stress and most of the time, in the early hours of the morning. WHY??? WHY must I always insist on starting assignments after 11pm?!

This morning, I decided on the research topic (due in about two days). I planned to think about it all day and then as soon as I get home, I'd start my research. Is that what I do? NO! So what did I do? Well, went to uni and passed my day like every Tuesday.

Went to the first class - although it's the last lecture for the semester so we had a fun time. The funny Indian (I ASSUME OK!) boy from last post got a prize for the best performance. Since he represented an iwi, his prize was a bag of kumara. Excuse me while I go LMAO.

Following this, I had a break and in this break I met up with my group and we decided on how to proceed in doing our group assignment. I like group assignments. Why? BECAUSE I'M LAZY AS FUCK. If I could ride on other people's coattails all the time, I would. Unfortunately, I start getting obsessive and paranoid. Then I'll freak out and then do extra work because I don't to fail. NOT THIS TIME! Feels like a responsible and reliable group. Don't think I'll need to do more than what is required. Sweet!

*insert transition here*! After the meeting, I had about 20 minutes till my next class and I spent it panicking about how I'm going to fail my exam for this class. Seriously, this subject used to be easy! I never had to put any effort into it and now... now I actually have to work hard. I fear I might actually get a C for it. Then class started and we played Chinese whispers. WTF? Yes, what a fun learning experience. =D

My next class was a geography class and I actually managed to stay awake during the entire lecture. We had a guest lecturer and she was amazing. Considering she held my attention for the entire class, it's pretty impressive. I can get distracted even on the internet. It was about Auckland public transport. Lol, laugh all you want but I see great developments planned for the future of public transport in Auckland. Just gotta pray that it actually comes true.

For lunch, I met up with a couple of friends and we walked down to the Viaduct and had Mexicali Fresh. It's Taco Tuesdays so they were selling tacos for $3 each. It's a messy experience, but yum! I'd definitely go back again eventually. Actually, I have been intending to try it out for a while but never got around to it. However, I don't think I'd pay full price for it - freaking $7 each and they aren't gigantic either! Should probably have took a picture but I dug too fast.

On our way up, we stopped by Kapiti and bought an ice cream. At first, I was like "hell no! $4 for one scoop of ice cream!" Then I tried a few flavours and my mouth had mini foodgasms one after the other so I gave in and bought one scoop. Imagine my surprise when that scoop turned out to be quite a generous serving! I got some dark chocolate chilli raspberry flavoured one. I actually wanted the other chocolate one but feared it might be too sweet by the time I finished it. I'll try it next time!



This post has once again gone off on a tangent. I slept on the train ride home then instead of starting my research like I'm supposed to, I just watched Youtube and had dinner. Grocery shopping followed before I finally started my research.

JK. I had a shower, went on Facebook and then at about 11:30pm I opened a word document and started typing out an outline but some how the bullet points I jotted down (usually I jot down bullet points that seem vaguely familiar so I can go research it later) turned into rough paragraphs. I pretty much wrote my essay... just need to go do research and find quotes from scholarly articles/books/etc to back up my bullshit. Wish me luck!

Other than procrastination...

I have this really annoying habit of falling asleep in class. And it's ALWAYS the same class. Geog202!!

The thing is, I'll be sleeping but I still hear the lecturer and every now and then, I sit up and scribble some notes down then plop back to sleep again. I did it today and the girl beside me got a fright, especially since I went straight back to sleeping. I did this a couple of times in class today and by the end of the lecture, she got pretty used to it. She probably thought I just had my head down and was actually listening to the lecturer.

HA! I wish. Never again will I take 8am classes. Today was the final 8am geography lecture we had. I don't think it was compulsory to go. Nevertheless, it was actually the most entertaining one! We were role-playing a council meeting about the distribution of water on Waiheke Island. Funnily enough, the 'residents' and the 'environmental' group didn't bother turning up. The award for the most in character/best performance would definitely go to the cool Indian (I'm assuming?) guy who role played an iwi representative. He was amazing and so into it. Everyone was too, lots of funny things flying around, although to an outsider would sound completely insensitive and racist but we all know it was done in good fun!

Also, I wish that my attention span could last just a little bit longer than a couple of minutes. I'd finish my assignments at a much faster pace.

I still haven't started my research. Ugh.

Yesterday, on the 19th day of May, our head chef got married in Japan. Unfortunately, I was not able to travel there and participate in it due to time restraints and budget problems. Heartbreaking! I was so keen to go as well!

I saw some pictures of the event and he looks so handsome and happy. His new wife looks stunning! She's beautiful on a normal day and she looks absolutely gorgeous in the photos. I'm sure they do her no justice though. I can't wait for him to come back to New Zealand so we (head chef and I) can gossip about everything!

Ok, *insert transition here*. This week has been slow. Business has been down after last Sunday's Mother's Day craze. However, uni work has been piling up. I am so hopeless with doing assignments early! I have a lab report to do (about coffee and coffee shops) and another mini research thing to do about water supply and disposal on Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Basically, I have to outline the potential water supply and disposing options available on the island. That one is due tomorrow, the coffee one on Thursday but here I am blogging. *le sigh*

To top things off, I have a test tomorrow as well. I'm not yet ready for it! The one thing I'm starting to worry about is the politics research assignment that's due on Friday. I have not even started researching it! Actually, to tell you all the truth, I haven't even chosen the topic.


Right, excuse me while I stop this entry and go do that water management thing.
